We celebrated the publication of the first major book on Francis Davison with a launch on Sunday 20th October 2013.
The author, art historian Andrew Lambirth, signed copies and the artist Telfer Stokes, who is Davison’s stepson, gave a short introductory talk.
To accompany the launch there was an exhibition of some 30 hitherto unseen Davison works in the gallery for the day.
Lambirth’s previous books include such notaries as Roger Hilton, John Hoyland, Margaret Mellis, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj and Craigie Aitchison.
Francis Davison is, in my estimation to date, the pre-eminent British abstract artist of the second half of the 20th century. – Julian Spalding, eminent art historian and curator of Davison’s only lifetime major exhibition at the Hayward gallery in 1983.
